The Dutch Oyster Association
The Dutch Oyster Association (Nederlandse Oestervereniging) is the umbrella organisation for Dutch oyster fishermen and
cultivators. Most oyster producers are member of the association, which was
established in 2007.
The association represents the interests of its
members. Among its activities are the yearly implementation of a fishing plan. It also tries to find a solution for the
alarming explosion of the wild Pacific oyster population in the Zeeland waters
and works on improving the national and international market position of Dutch
oyster producers. The association is a partner in the European research project Oysterecover, that is looking into tackling the oyster disease Bonamia. It is also involved in the development of alternative cultivation methods.
In November 2011 the association commissioned the current assessment of the fishery against the Marine Stewardship Council standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries.
