launched an information site on aquaculture in the Netherlands. The site
provides information for existing and starting entrepreneurs, policy-makers,

Opening of
Zeeland oyster season in Antwerp (Belgium) on 29 September
On the 29th of September the Zeeland oyster season will be
opened officially in Antwerp (B). There is a special programme for the Belgian
and Dutch press.

Oysters prevent cold
Because of high zinc and magnesium levels, Zinc protects
against cold flu. The higher the zinc level, the least susceptibility to cold.

The
Centre for Shellfish Research executed a study into spatfall collection
for oyster culture. In co-operation with a number of oyster cultivators
various types of spat collectors were tested. Plastic tubes appeared to
be the best methods for spat collection of flat oysters while plastic
discs were better for gigas. The study also showed that the survival
rate of gigas is better compared to flat oysters. The survival rate of
flat oysters on nets is better compared to bottom cultivation. For more

The Minister for Fischeries, Mr. Veerman, received
over 10.000 signatures in support of sustainable shellfish fisheries during a
working visit to the industry. The Minister is asked to stimulate
innovative projects on sustainable fishing and farming methods.

Kwinten de Paepe,
chef of restaurant 'Oesterbar' in Leuven convincingly won the award 'Belgium's
best oyster chef' at the 'Kokerello Fair'. The aim of the yearly contest is to
encourage chefs to develop creative oyster dishes.
It is a joint initiative of the
Dutch Oyster Producer's Organisation,
and the Belgian 'Horeca Magazine',

As part of the CRAFT Co-operative Research project 1000
bonamia-resistant 'Rossmore Oysters' were re-laid in Lake Grevelingen. The
objective is to investigate by means of DNA research whether or not the oysters
remain resistant. In addition, research into the carriers of Bonamia is
conducted. The Dutch Oyster Producers' Organisation ís a partner in the project.
The project is part of a larger European funded research programme.

On December the 8th , the first
'Best Belgian oyster chef'
contest will be held. It is a joint initiative of the
Dutch Oyster Producer's Organisation,
and the Belgian 'Horeca Magazine',
The contest will take place at the Kokerello Fair in the town of
Gent.

The Dutch Ministry for Fisheries has given
exclusive permission to members of the Dutch Oyster Producers' Organisation to
fish on Saturdays from sunrise to 12.00a.m.

The proposal by the Dutch Oyster Producers' Organisation to
swap a number of oyster culture lots to optimize production possibilities has
been approved by the Dutch Ministry for Fisheries.

An increasing number of people is discovering Dutch
oysters. Dutch oyster production doubled from 20 million oysters to 40 million
during the past years. This is sharp increase in production is due to
the growing demand for oysters produced in Zeeland and increasing
professionalism in the production sector. The Netherlands is now the second
oyster producer in the European Union, following France.
